Description
Barry's is a shop and house located on a street corner in Chacewater, dating from the early 19th century. The building features stucco over studwork and a concrete tiled roof that is hipped over the shop, with a brick chimney situated over the gable of the party wall of No 4. Its tapered plan expands from a one-room shop to a one-room double-depth house, and it stands two storeys tall.
The front facing Fore Street has four windows, a central doorway, and a corner shop. The shop front extends around the left-hand return, with two first-floor windows above. All windows are original 12-pane hornless sashes, framed with moulded wooden architraves. There are moulded hoods supported by consoles over the doorway and the ground floor window to the right on the Fore Street elevation. Although the shop windows were replaced in the 20th century, the fascia with terminal consoles and moulded cornice above has been retained. The shopfront is enhanced by rusticated pilaster piers, with a similar pilaster positioned between the house and No 4.
Chacewater is recognized for the preservation of many of its 19th-century shop fronts, and Barry's serves as an interesting example of this architectural heritage. The interior has not been inspected.
