Description

This is an early 19th-century shop with living accommodation above, likely built on the site of an earlier structure. The building is of mass wall construction, with a stuccoed exterior and an asbestos slate roof, the ends of which are gabled. A left-hand side stack has a rendered shaft with a platband, and there are cast-iron gutters. The plan follows a double-depth layout with two rooms wide, and includes a probable later addition on the left end. This section, built of stone rubble, has varying floor levels, a lower roofline, and a rounded corner, and is rumored to have originally been a blacksmith's shop.

The front of the building has an asymmetrical facade with three windows, featuring regular window placement. There are recessed six-panel entrance doors, with the upper panels being fielded, each with a transom window. The right-hand door (No.2) has a reeded doorcase with a cornice. A late 19th or early 20th-century shop front exists to the left, featuring plate glass shop windows that cant forward to a glazed door with an overlight. The first floor has two late 19th or 20th-century two-pane sash windows in earlier openings. The first-floor window on the left is an early 19th-century twelve-pane hornless sash. The lower-roofed addition has a doorway with a timber lintel and a 20th-century three-light plate-glass shop window.

The interior partitions have been altered to accommodate retail use. Some timber, dated to the 16th century, was reportedly found within No.2.
