Description

No. 83 Fore Street is part of a terrace of three houses, one of which includes a shop. The terrace likely dates from the early 18th century and has undergone some alterations over time. The exterior is stuccoed and features a natural slate roof with gabled ends where it meets neighboring buildings. The chimney stacks are made of local grey limestone rubble and have slate drip ledges, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.

The layout consists of a double-depth range. No. 22 is one room wide, while No. 21, to the right, has a rear wing and an additional first-floor room set back over a cartway entrance. No. 83, on the left, is double-fronted with a slightly canted corner at the junction of Station Road and Fore Street.

The building has two storeys and an asymmetrical but regular façade with a 2:2:2 window arrangement. A notable feature is the deep, coved eaves cornice of early 18th-century design, which wraps around the right corner and extends above the cartway. No. 83 has a central half-glazed shop door from the late 19th or early 20th century, flanked by recessed shallow bow windows with timber glazing bars. The first floor has two replaced 4-pane timber horned sashes. No. 22 features a half-glazed timber front door to the left and two 12-pane timber sashes, one on the ground floor and two on the first floor. No. 21 has a similar C20 timber half-glazed front door and 12-pane sashes, one on the ground floor, one on the first floor, and one above the cartway. The right side of No. 21 includes a 19th-century four-panel service door with an overlight under the cartway.

The interior of No. 83 has been altered and features a 20th-century stair between the front and rear rooms. The interiors of the other houses have not been seen but may still have interesting features. Some exposed timbers are said to have been removed from at least one of the houses. The terrace is included for its group value.
