Description

A pair of houses dating back to around 1830, likely with an earlier structure beneath, stand on Station Road in Buckfastleigh. The buildings are constructed from local grey limestone rubble, originally rendered, with an asbestos slate roof. The roofs are gabled where they meet neighbouring properties, and feature stacks with stone rubble shafts and slate drip ledges. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present. A layer of cement render remains on the front elevation above the cartway and around the door reveals.

The plan differentiates between the two houses: No.12 is a simple single-fronted design, while No.11 has a single depth with a lobby entrance to the left and an additional first-floor room above what was formerly a cartway, now converted into a garage. Stacks are positioned axially and at the left end of No.11.

The front elevation is asymmetrical, with a 1:4 window arrangement. No.12, on the left, has a segmental brick arch above a 20th-century timber front door with an overlight, and a 16-pane timber sash window beside it, suggesting a previous shop front. A 16-pane horned timber sash window is on the first floor. No.11 features red brick segmental-headed details over the ground-floor openings, timber lintels above the first-floor windows, and a narrow round-headed doorway containing a blind fanlight above a 6-panel 20th-century timber door. The ground floor has two 16-pane sashes, the first floor three, with one being a 4-pane timber replacement.

The interior was not inspected, but it is reported to contain a plain staircase, with the possibility of other original features. The buildings are included on the heritage register for their group value.
