Description

Church Bridge is a road bridge over the River Mardle, built in 1749, as indicated by a datestone. It is constructed from local grey limestone rubble and granite. The bridge features a single span and a segmental arch with a granite ashlar arch ring. The parapets are plain, made of both granite and grey limestone coping. Elizabeth Knowling has noted and photographed the datestone, which bears the name S Meaffield. Historical records indicate that the bridge was described as being in decay as early as 1670.
