Description
The flight of stone steps leading from Station Road to the Church of Holy Trinity in Buckfastleigh is a notable structure, likely dating from the 19th century or earlier, and has been recently repaired. The steps feature rough limestone kerbs and pitched stone treads, arranged in rough horizontal courses. Approximately halfway up the flight, there are two adjacent steps with pitched stone treads laid at right angles to the others, locally referred to as the kissing steps. One of the steps includes the initials TW, which are likely those of the mason who carried out the repairs. This flight of steps is a distinctive and unusual feature in the town.
