Description
No. 12 Fore Street is a town house that dates from the 18th century or possibly earlier. The front features incised stucco on studwork, and it has a steep asbestos slate roof with a slate verge on the left side. A brick stack is located on the right, and there is a moulded and modillion eaves cornice. The building has a single-depth plan with a rear wing that is positioned at right angles. It stands three storeys tall and has a one-window range. The windows are late 19th-century horned sashes, consisting of a pair of 2-pane sashes above a sash with margin panes, all within a moulded architrave. The shop front, altered in the late 19th century, features an end pilaster design and a fascia that is concealed by a 20th-century fascia.
Inside, there is an 18th-century open-well closed-string staircase with column-turned balusters and a moulded handrail that lands on square newels. The first-floor front chamber has a heavy moulded ceiling cornice from the 19th century, along with a late 19th-century chimneypiece that includes a tiled iron grate. The chamber above features an early 19th-century chimneypiece with corner blocks and roundels. The roof structure has not been inspected but is likely to be original.
