Description

No. 10 Fore Street is an 18th-century town house, possibly with earlier origins, that was remodelled in the mid-19th century. It incorporates a later shop. The front of the building is rendered over a rubble core, with a scantle slate roof and 19th-century crested clay ridge tiles. At the rear, the roofs are of dry slate, with a brick axial stack. The building has a single-depth plan, with a rear wing on the right and a narrower wing above a doorway. It is three storeys high and has a three-window front. The windows are mostly mid- to late-19th-century four-pane hornless sashes, with the two windows above the shop on the right being reduced in height. A late-20th-century shop front has a wide splayed doorway. A plaque above the left-hand doorway commemorates John Arnold, a horologist born in Bodmin in 1736, who perfected the ship's chronometer. The rear has slatehanging on studwork, and three early- to mid-19th-century hornless sashes with glazing bars, alongside one later sash. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest.
