Description
27 and 27A Higher Market Street is a town house with a shop, likely dating from the 18th century on a 16th-century site, with the front remodeled in the late 19th century. The building features stucco on studwork at the front and has a dry slate roof with modillions along the eaves fascia, and a brick stack on the left side. It has a deep plan that includes a rear wing and is two storeys high with a two-window range. The first floor has late 19th-century four-pane sash windows set within moulded wooden architraves, above a late 19th-century four-light shop front with segmental-headed lights and a four-panel door on the left. The shop front is flanked by pilasters and has a full-width fascia with a moulded cornice. The rear wing has a total of three windows facing the courtyard of Bank Cottages, which are not included in the listing, and 29A. The right-hand part, 27A, has an irregular two-window range with timber lintels above the openings. The interior of the rear of Nos 27 and 27A was inspected around 1980, revealing an oak truss from the 16th-century roof structure, featuring curved feet, a morticed collar, and threaded purlins.
