Description

35 and 37 Higher Market Street is a town house that later became a public house and a house with a shop. It dates from the 17th century and was remodeled in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features stucco on rubble and studwork, with end pilasters, a plinth, and an anthemion sill band at the first floor. It has a steep dry Delabole slate roof, with brick stacks at the left end and a rear lateral stack on the right. The plan is U-shaped, flanking a central through-passage, and includes rear wings at right angles. The building is three storeys high and has a three-window range.

The second floor has early 19th-century sixteen-pane hornless sash windows, two of which are set within moulded architraves. On the lower floors, there is a late 19th-century two-storey canted three-light bay window on the right and a similar oriel window on the first floor towards the left, both with hornless sashes. The left side features a mid-19th-century eighteen-pane six-light shop front with a moulded entablature and a glazed door on its right under the oriel. The central doorway, which fronts the passage, has a late 19th-century four-panel door and a two-centred arched masonic panel above it on the first floor.

The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey, but when inspected around 1980, it contained several interesting features, including a late 17th-century scratch-moulded two-panel door and a wide 17th or 18th-century window on the right side of the passage.
