Description
31 Higher Market Street is a town house that was later converted into a shop. It dates from the 17th century and was remodeled in the late 18th century. The building features render on jettied studwork above a rubble ground floor, with 17th-century chamfered granite round arches leading to the basement. There is some slate hanging on the sides, and a modillioned triangular pediment crowns the low-pitched asbestos slate roof. The structure has a double-depth plan, meaning it is positioned end-on to the street. It stands three storeys tall over a basement and has a one-window range. The central feature on the upper floors is an early 19th-century sixteen-pane hornless sash window. The ground floor includes two 18th-century projecting shop windows with externally-moulded glazing bars, situated beneath a deep jetty. These flanking windows are accompanied by an early 20th-century partly-glazed door, which is accessed by two granite steps between two basement windows. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The 18th-century shop front is a particularly notable feature of the building.
