Description
This is a pair of town houses, originally one dwelling, later divided and with shops incorporated. The building dates back to the 17th century, with significant remodelling in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The exterior is constructed of rubble, with painted rubble sections, timber lintels, and a steep scantle slate roof with sprocketed front eaves. There's a brick lateral stack, one on the left and an end stack at the rear of number 10, plus a cast-iron ogee gutter.
The structure comprises an early single-depth range at the front, with an early 19th-century wing behind number 12 and a late 17th-century wing at a right angle behind number 10. The front facade presents an overall three-window arrangement. The first floor has a pair of hornless sash windows flanking an early 19th-century casement window with twenty-four panes, a central opening light. Copies of sash windows from the 20th century fill the ground floor openings on the left. A small-paned bowed shop window with pilasters and a moulded entablature is situated to the left of number 10. A repaired, similar window, also with a pedimented doorway (centrally positioned across the entire front), is in the centre of number 12, leading to a 20th-century panelled door. A 20th-century door is set in the opening of a former wide window on the right.
Inside number 10, several original features have been preserved. These include a late 17th-century two-panel scratch-moulded door, late 17th or 18th-century floor and roof structures, a heavy doorframe leading from a rear room to the courtyard, some dado panelling, and an early 19th-century straight-flight staircase. Number 12 was not inspected.
