Description

A terrace of four houses, numbers 12 to 15 inclusive, built between 1789 and 1792. The buildings are constructed of stock brick, with number 14 being wholly rendered. They have slate roofs and form an L-shape. The long arm of the L (numbers 12a to 15) has a rusticated base and a parapet. Each unit has a stack to the left. Number 12 has two sashes on the second and third floors. Numbers 12a, 14 and 15 each have three sashes (two rows of nine bays in total). A continuous tented verandah runs along the entire frontage, supported by piers with scrolled brackets and featuring Geometric pattern rails and scrolled brackets. Numbers 12a and 15 have glazed-in verandahs. All units have three double-hung sashes on the first floor, with two to number 12. Number 12 has single sashes to the ground floor and basement, along with a four-panel door (partly glazed) and a semi-circular fanlight in a rusticated surround with four moulded segmental steps, all within the return angle of the frontage. Numbers 12a to 15 have two sashes to each of their ground floors and basements. Number 12a has a door of six panels within an elliptical doorway with side lights; number 14 has a similar door of four panels; and number 15 has a half-glazed door with an attached Doric columned porch. Simple rails are present at the steps and basement areas, topped with urn finials, except at number 14, which has fleur-de-lys rails. The group value of these buildings is enhanced by their cohesive design and historical significance.
