Description
A terrace of fourteen houses built in 1794, located in West Square, Southwark. The buildings are constructed of yellow brick with stucco dressings, featuring slate mansard roofs with dormers to numbers 8 and 9. A stuccoed parapet includes a dentil cornice, although this has been lost on numbers 11 and 14-17.
The houses are three storeys high with basements. Each house presents two bays with three openings on the ground floor. The central section, featuring numbers 12 and 13, has a slightly projecting pedimented design, flanked by numbers 11 and 14. The end pairs, numbers 6-7 and 18-19, also project. Steps lead to doorways (some of which have been replaced with windows) within round-arched recesses, featuring stucco impost blocks, keystones, and simple fanlights. Numbers 18 and 19, and number 6, have later door pieces with stucco pilasters supporting an entablature. The central section's first-floor windows are set in segmental-arched recesses with a stucco string at the spring. The end pairs and the house on either side of the central section have first-floor windows set in round-arched recesses with a similar string. A sill band runs across the first floor of these houses. All other windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within gauged brick arches. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected. Cast-iron hand and area railings are present as subsidiary features. The buildings of West Square form a unified group.
