Description

Numbers 20-29 Sutherland Square form a terrace of ten houses dating from the early 19th century. The houses are built of yellow brick with stucco dressings, and have slate roofs with a stuccoed eaves cornice. Some houses have a roof extension. The houses are two storeys high with a basement, and most have two bays, although numbers 20-24 and 29 have three bays each. Numbers 20-21 and 22-23 are paired together under hipped roofs, with a dividing brick pilaster and a pair of doors set back within recessed sections. These pairs have stuccoed pilasters supporting an entablature. Numbers 24-29 have similar doorpieces, but at a higher level, with only the entrance to number 29 in a recessed bay. The doors have later surrounds and oblong overlights. Gauged flat brick arches appear above all sash windows; the ground floor windows have margin lights (except for number 24), and the first-floor windows have glazing bars and a stucco sill band. The ground-floor windows of numbers 24-29 have projecting sills supported by console brackets and cast-iron guards. The interior of the properties has not been inspected. The property includes cast-iron area railings featuring a palmette motif.
