Description

Harker's Studio is a building located on Queen's Row in Southwark, constructed in 1904 and partially rebuilt in the mid-20th century. It was designed for Joseph Harker, a notable theatrical scenery painter. The building features English bond brickwork and a predominantly glazed gabled roof. The two-storey gable end has three bays, with red brick segmental arches above metal casement windows flanking double doors on both the ground and first floors. A moulded red brick cornice runs beneath the gable, which includes a louvred oculus. The rear elevation, facing Horsley Street, was rebuilt in the mid-20th century.

Inside, the main room is spacious and illuminated by a glazed roof. It contains large wooden paint frames equipped with pulleys and counterweights, which are positioned along the side walls and in the center of the room. There are large double doors leading to the ground and first floors at the rear wall. Harker's Studio is an important and rare example of a theatrical scene-painting workshop, named after Joseph Harker (1855-1927), who gained prominence for his designs in Henry Irving's productions at the Lyceum Theatre.
