Description
Aycliffe House is a block of flats built around 1903-1914 as part of an estate developed under the direction of Octavia Hill for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, with Cluttons acting as the builder. The building is constructed from yellow brick with red brick detailing, featuring a dark glazed brick plinth. It has a high-pitched, hipped tiled roof with a red brick stepped eaves cornice. The three-storey, four-bay design includes a timber, tile-roofed gabled porch covering the entrance door in the second bay from the left. Sash windows with glazing bars are topped with shouldered stone lintels and set on bracketed sills; those in the bays flanking the entrance are paired and form slightly projecting bays on the lower two storeys. Small casement windows are positioned above the door and windows, similarly detailed with sills and lintels. The interior of the building has not been inspected. Attached area railings with spearhead standards are present. Aycliffe House contributes to the group value of the surrounding terraced houses at 1, 1A, 3-11, and 13-23 Portland Street, which are also listed at Grade II.
