Description
The lime kiln, located south-south-west of the junction of Albany Road and Wells Way, was built in the early 19th century for the manufacture of Roman cement. It is constructed of brick in English bond, and the inside of the cone has been relined with bricks several times. The kiln is a single stage with battered walls and has an octagonal shape, featuring alternating long and short facets. Each short facet is pierced at the base by a round-arched drawhole, which was likely topped by a short canopy to protect the worker feeding the fire from the weather. The cone in the center helps the burnt cement fall through the drawholes, although it has partly diminished in height. The interior of the kiln is shaped like an inverted, truncated cone.
