Description

The Former Church of St George is a Commissioners' Church that has been converted for residential use. It was built between 1822 and 1824 by architect Francis Bedford, with an apse added by Basil Champneys in 1893. The building is constructed of stone in a Classical style and has a rectangular plan. It features two storeys and a giant hexastyle portico on the west side, which has an entablature adorned with wreaths in the frieze, a cornice, and a pediment supported by Greek Doric columns. The openings behind the portico on both the ground and first floors have been blocked up. There is a tower at the rear that consists of three stages, showcasing Doric and Ionic orders. The side elevations are two storeys high and consist of five bays, with the smaller ground-floor windows also blocked up. The interior was once richly decorated in 1909, but this embellishment has been lost due to fire damage.
