Description
Two semi-detached houses at 86 and 86A Camberwell Road, dating to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with later alterations. Number 86 is stuccoed with a cornice and blocking course; Number 86A is painted brick with a stucco cornice and blocking course. Number 86 is two storeys and has four bays, which are irregular. A garage entrance cuts through the second bay from the left. The right two bays feature an entablature with a dentil cornice. Above the first floor of this section is a high parapet, which displays a Coade stone oval medallion in a crest. This crest contains a sculpted figure of Flora in high relief, with a decorative patera beneath. The medallion is flanked by two rectangular Coade stone panels depicting goddesses of plenty. The first floor of the left section is articulated with pilasters supporting a frieze and cornice. The windows and entrance are of a later date. Number 86A is three storeys with two bays. Ground-floor openings are round-arched, with a stucco band at the spring; the doorway has a corniced head, a stucco architrave, and a keystone. Flat, gauged-brick arches are above the sash windows with glazing bars on the first and second floors, with a stucco band at the first-floor sills. The interior was not inspected. Number 86 is listed primarily for its well-preserved, crisply modelled Coade stone medallions, which originated from Dr Lettsom's demolished house in Camberwell Grove. Numbers 86 and 86A are considered to form a group with numbers 88-92 on the same road.
