Description

Numbers 47 and 48 are a pair of houses from the early 19th century, located on the west side of Addington Square in Southwark. They are constructed of multi-coloured stock brick and feature a low pitched, hipped slate roof with deep bracketed eaves. Each house has three storeys and three bays, with the outer bays marked by two stucco giant pilasters and a frieze above. The doorways are segment-headed and flanked by attached, fluted Doric columns, with a cornice head that connects to panelled impost blocks. Number 48 retains its original double door, while number 47 has had its door replaced with a window due to the houses being later combined, and it features a two-storey, one-bay entrance extension on the side. The return of number 48 is also defined by paired giant stucco pilasters and a frieze above. There is a side door with a rusticated architrave, a palmette patterned frieze, and a mutule cornice. The ground-floor windows are round-arched and set in round-headed recesses with a stucco string at the spring. The upper-floor windows have flat, gauged-brick arches, with the first-floor windows being long and featuring wrought-iron balconies. All windows are sashes with glazing bars, and there is a stucco sill band across the central four bays of the second floor. The interior has not been inspected. The houses also have area railings as subsidiary features.
