Description
Colnbrook Street Schools are national schools built between 1870 and 1874, likely designed by a Mr Hall. The stone dressings were renewed around the time the Church of St Jude on St George's Road was rebuilt, circa 1898. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings, and the roof covering is concealed by a parapet.
The exterior features a gable-facing elevation with two storeys and a two-window range in the Gothic Revival style. There is a first-floor entrance at the south corner accessed by a flight of stairs, set within a gabled porch, and a second entrance below. The ground-floor windows are mullioned, with four and six lights respectively, while the first-floor hall windows have Perpendicular tracery, each with mullions and one transom. A wall shaft rises to a bell cote between these windows. The facing gable has a crowstepped design and forms a strong visual group with the east-facing gables of St Jude's Church on St George's Road.
To the south, there is a two-storey, flat-roofed addition dating from 1902-1903, and a modern addition to the north opened in 1966, neither of which is of architectural interest. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the first St Jude's School was a temporary structure built around 1850 after the former Philanthropic Society Chapel was sold to the Anglican Church. The building was given its current character between 1870 and 1874 when the chapel, now St Jude's Church, was reoriented. The original architect's identity is not recorded, but it is likely that the work was completed by Mr Hall, who was the architect for the Deptford School Board.
