Description
The Elizabeth Baxter Hostel is a hostel built in 1841, located on Lambeth Road in Southwark. The building is constructed of stucco and features a cornice and parapet with an additional cornice. It stands three storeys high with a basement and has three bays. The central section, which slightly projects, is accentuated with quoins. The ground floor showcases banded rustication and includes a central feature of pilasters that frame the door and sash windows on either side, topped with a frieze and a break-front cornice. The outer bays have sash windows with keystones, while the upper floors contain casement windows; the first-floor windows have architraves, and the central window is adorned with a pediment on console brackets. The second-floor windows are in plain reveals, with some featuring iron guards. A foundation stone on the building indicates it was laid by HRH the Duke of Cambridge, assisted by the Right Reverend the Bishop of Winchester on May 28, 1841. To the right, there is a canted three-bay return with similar architectural details. The interior has not been inspected. The property also includes cast-iron area railings as subsidiary features.
