Description
East Lodge is a lodge built in 1842 by Henry Heard and Ann Hewitt on land sub-let from the Bethlehem Hospital, and possibly designed by Sydney Smirke. It is constructed of stuccoed brick with an asphalt roof and is single-storeyed with a possible basement. The building has an L-shaped plan with a triangular addition to one corner.
A projecting plinth and string course run around the exterior. The front facing south-east is symmetrical, with two-light casement windows on either side of a projecting chimney stack. Above the string course is a parapet with chamfered stone coping. The chimney breast at parapet level features a cartouche displaying a coat of arms within a recessed, square panel, topped by two tall, octagonal chimney stacks with moulded caps.
The entrance front, facing south-west, mirrors the road front with a two-light casement on the left and a doorway with a 20th-century panelled door on the right. Above the door, projecting beyond the parapet, is a square panel containing the armorial shield of the Bethlehem Hospital.
The north-west side is without windows but has a projecting chimney breast with a single, octagonal chimney stack. A later, triangular bathroom is lower and has a horizontal window. The north-east side abuts a single-storey addition to the rear of 52 Lambeth Road. The interior has not been inspected.
