Description

The Duke of Clarence Public House is a public house built around 1820, likely designed by William Mountague, who was the surveyor to the City of London. The building is constructed of brick with painted stucco dressings and features a parapeted roof with brick stacks. It has a canted plan with a concave four-window front facing St. George's Circus, a single-window front on Borough Road, and a three-window front on London Road. The structure has four storeys and a basement.

On the first floor, there are 1/1 and 2/2 sash windows facing St. George's Circus, with 3/3 sashes above on both floors. There is a 1/1 sash window with 3/3 sashes above on Borough Road, and on London Road, there are 1/1 sashes and either 3/3 sashes or blanked windows above. The ground floor features a continuous late 19th-century pub front with Corinthian pilasters and an entablature, along with moulded window frames and panelled doors.

Inside, the ground floor is mostly opened up, but some late 19th-century bar fittings remain. There are two original stick baluster staircases with turned columnar newel posts that lead up to the third floor. A veined white marble chimney-piece is present in one of the first-floor rooms, along with some door and window surrounds and boarded chimney-pieces in the upper-floor rooms. This public house was first leased to John Panton, a victualler, in 1820, and it continues to operate as a pub. It is part of a significant group of buildings that includes the Obelisk in St. George's Circus, Nos. 123-131 London Road, and 113-119 Borough Road, as well as the former Presbyterian Chapel and the St. George the Martyr Library, both located in Borough Road.
