Description
Mawdley House is a block of flats with shops, built between 1905 and 1906 by the London County Council Architects' Department, and attributed to Roger Stark. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with stone copings and dressings, and features glazed brick on the recessed balcony ranges at the rear. The roof is tiled.
The exterior is five storeys tall, or four storeys with dormers, and includes balconies on the rear elevations for access to the flats, along with stair towers. The front has gabled ranges facing Waterloo Road, with recessed sections that create a balcony at the second-floor level. These recessed sections are supported by brick piers, which is an unusual feature for LCC housing. The intermediate ranges have broad, sweeping eaves held up by elegant metal brackets, a design element repeated across the five parallel blocks of this estate. All openings are either flat- or segmental-arched, featuring sash windows that maintain an authentic design. There are remnants of sign fascias on the ground-floor shops.
The interior was not inspected. Mawdley House is part of a group of five blocks, including Dauncey House, Algar House, Delarche House, and Overy House, which share a similar design and materials. While each block resembles the LCC Boundary Estate in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the Webber Row Estate exhibits a distinct character likely influenced by the architect.
