Description
Overy House is a block of flats with shops built in 1905-6 as part of the London County Council Estate on Webber Row, Southwark. It was designed by the LCC Architects' Department, with Susan Beattie attributing the design to Roger Stark. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with stone copings and dressings. The rear elevation features recessed balcony ranges with glazed brick, and the roof is tiled. It is five or four storeys high, including dormers, with balconies providing access to flats; stair towers are also present. A distinctive feature is the broad, sweeping eaves supported by elegant metal brackets, which are repeated on the four other blocks in the estate: Mawdley House, Dauncey House, Algar House, and Delarche House. All windows are flat- or segmental-arched sash windows. The design shares some similarities with the LCC Boundary Estate, but the Webber Row Estate possesses a unique character, likely introduced by the architect. The interior has not been inspected.
