Description

Algar House is a block of flats with shops built in 1905-6 as part of the London County Council Estate on Webber Row, Southwark. It was designed by the LCC Architects' Department, with the work of Roger Stark being specifically acknowledged by Susan Beattie. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with stone copings and dressings. The rear elevations feature recessed balcony ranges constructed with glazed brick, providing access to the flats. The roof is tiled, with broad, sweeping eaves supported by elegant metal brackets – a design detail also found on the four parallel blocks that make up the estate: Mawdley House, Dauncey House, Delarche House and Overy House. Algar House is five to six storeys high, with dormers and stair towers. All windows are either flat- or segmental-arched, with sash windows of traditional design. The interior has not been inspected. While the overall plan resembles the LCC Boundary Estate, the Webber Row Estate possesses a distinctive character likely introduced by the architect.
