Description

Numbers 51 to 85 Gower Street form a terrace of 18 houses built in 1786 and 1787. The houses are constructed of darkened yellow stock brick, with a stucco band at ground floor level and to the first floor sills. The roofs are slated mansard roofs with dormers. The houses are arranged over three storeys, with attics and basements, though numbers 65, 67 and 73 are four storeys high. Each house has three windows. The entrances feature stucco surrounds with pilasters and dentil cornices, with alternating round and segmental-arched doorways, each with a fanlight and panelled door. Gauged brick flat arches are above the recessed sash windows, most retaining their original glazing bars. Ground and first floor windows have bracketed sills and cast-iron window guards. The ground floor windows of numbers 65 and 67 are set within segmental-arched recesses with stucco archivolts, imposts and keys. Stone dentil cornices are present, with additional cornices at third floor level on numbers 65, 67 and 73. Parapets top the buildings. The interiors have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings, mostly with urn finials, are present to the areas.
