Description

Numbers 99 to 113 on Gower Street, including the Catholic Chaplaincy at number 111, form a terrace of six houses built around 1790, with some alterations. The houses at numbers 99 to 103 are constructed from darkened stock brick and feature slate mansard roofs with dormers. They are three storeys high, with attics and basements, while number 103 has four storeys. Each house has round-arched doorways flanked by Doric columns that support entablature heads, along with fanlights and panelled doors. The ground floors have shallow arcaded recesses connected by impost bands, with number 101 featuring an elliptical arch. The recessed sash windows are topped with gauged brick flat arches, and there are sill bands on the first floor, along with parapets. Number 105 has been refaced in the late 19th century, displaying darkened brick with a stucco ground floor and dressings, a slate mansard roof with pedimented dormers, and three storeys with an attic and basement. Its windows are square-headed and recessed, with pediments above the first floor and the centre window on the second floor, and it has a bracketed cornice with a balustraded parapet above and a stucco panel below.

Numbers 107 to 113 are finished in stucco with rusticated ground floors and also have slate mansard roofs with dormers. They are three storeys high, with attics and basements, and each house originally had three windows. Number 107 has square-headed entrances, while numbers 109 and 113 have blocked entrances. Number 111 features a round-arched doorway with panelled pilaster-jambs, a cornice-head, a fanlight, and a panelled door. The first floor has a plain sill band and square-headed, recessed sash windows, along with parapets. The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace is complemented by attached cast-iron railings to the areas, and number 101 includes a wrought-iron lamp standard.
