Description

This is a terrace of five houses, numbered 16 to 24, located on the south side of Portland Place in Royal Leamington Spa. The houses were built between 1824 and 1836, with later additions and alterations. They are constructed of reddish-brown brick with stucco facades, painted except for number 16, and have Welsh slate roofs. Cast-iron railings run alongside the steps and areas.

The houses are two and three storeys high, with basements, and numbers 16 and 18 have attic dormers. There are ten first-floor windows, two per house, with the house on the left having a full-height canted bay. Number 24 has a first-floor window with a 1/1 sash and margin lights, incorporating stained glass, within a hollow-moulded architrave. Other first-floor windows are primarily 6/6 or 3/6 sashes. The third floor of numbers 20 and 22 has a prominent cornice. The ground floor of the canted bay at number 24 has three 1/1 sashes with horns, followed by a 1/1 sash, a 6/6 sash, a 2/2 sash with horns, and another 6/6 sash.

The entrances to numbers 24, 22, 20, 18 and 16 are accessed by three or four steps, leading to part-glazed, panelled doors within pilastered surrounds with a frieze and cornice. Number 24 also features a chamfered, cambered-arched surround with a keystone and a hood mould with foliate stops. Basement windows include 4/4 sashes, 3/6 sashes, casement windows, and doors. The terrace is topped with copings, and tall ridge stacks with cornices are present.

At the rear, numbers 18 and 16 have 6-pane French windows with divided overlights and verandahs featuring a diamond pattern balustrade. The interior of the houses was not inspected during the listing process.

The railings to the sides of the steps and areas are topped with cusped finials. Portland Place itself was laid out between 1823 and 1824.
