Description

Purley House, now flats, was built between 1828 and 1834, with subsequent alterations. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco to the front and right facades, featuring a Welsh slate roof and cast-iron balcony and railings. The house is three storeys high with a basement, originally containing two first-floor windows and an inset, single-storey entrance range to the right. The first floor has tall 6/9 sash windows, the second floor has 3/6 sashes with sills, and the ground floor has 3/6 sashes with sills. All windows have plain reveals. A three-step approach leads to a part-glazed, five-panel entrance door with an overlight containing glazing bars, covered by a tent hood. The basement level features a central part-glazed door between a casement window and an 8/2 sash. A continuous balcony with a double-heart-and-anthemion motif balustrade runs along the first floor. The interior was not inspected during the listing process. Area railings and a gate are present, incorporating anthemion finials. Grove Street was laid out in 1828, with the west side and lower portion of the east side completed by 1834. The building forms an architectural group with Nos. 48 Grove Street and 6 Regent Street.
