Description
Clarence House is a house, built between 1828 and 1834, and later altered, situated in Royal Leamington Spa. It is now divided into flats. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, and has a Welsh slate roof with a cast-iron verandah.
The exterior presents two storeys, with three first-floor windows and a deeply-recessed, two-storey range with a single first-floor window to the right. A plinth is visible. There are five roll-edged and one plain step leading to an off-centre entrance, which features a three-panel door with a roll-moulded lower panel, sidelights, and a distyle Tuscan porch with a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The windows are predominantly 6/6 sashes, with sills in plain reveals. One window opening to the first floor on the left is blind. The roof is hipped, with end and rear stacks.
The garden facade (to the left) features two storeys and three first-floor windows; these windows are 6/6 sashes with plain reveals and sills, as well as Venetian shutter boxes with shutters. On the ground floor, there are two 4-pane French windows with divided overlights, with a casement inserted between them. Five roll-edged steps and one plain step lead to a continuous verandah featuring a scrolled balustrade and ornamental struts. The range to the right has a part-glazed entrance on the ground floor and a 1/1 sash window to the first floor.
The interior has not been inspected.
Grove Street was laid out in 1828, with the west side and lower part of the east side completed by 1834. Clarence House occupies a corner site and forms an architectural group value context with numbers 4-14 (even) Portland Place.
