Description
Number 53 and the attached railings, and Number 8A Regent Street with its attached railings, are a house, now used as flats and shops, built between 1828 and 1834. Later additions and alterations have been made. The construction is predominantly pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco to the front and left facades, topped with a Welsh slate roof and cast-iron railings.
The building is three storeys high with a basement, featuring two windows on the first floor. The first floor has a blind opening and a 6/6 sash window with a blind box, both with plain reveals and sills. The second floor has two 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals with sills. The ground floor entrance has an elliptically-arched opening with six steps leading to a part-glazed, six-panel door, sidelights, and an elliptical overlight with decorative glazing-bars. A barrel-vaulted roof is present, along with fielded-panel reveals. To the right is a narrow 6/6 sash window with a plain reveal and sill. To the left is a shop front with a part-glazed door and a plate-glass window flanked by pilaster strips. A continuous frieze and cornice run along the facade. The basement has a three-pane casement window. The building has a low parapet with copings and a hipped roof to the left, with ridge and side stacks.
The left return elevation has three first-floor windows, each with a ten-pane French window and divided overlight, alongside a replacement continuous balcony. The second floor has 6/6 sash windows with plain reveals and sills. The ground floor has a 1/1 sash window. The shop front has a projecting bay with plate glass, and a frieze and cornice. The basement has a part-glazed door and a 6/1 sash window. The interior was not inspected.
The area railings and gate are characterised by bars with sword-hilt finials. Grove Street was laid out in 1828, with the west side and lower part of the east side completed by 1834. The building occupies a significant corner position.
