Description

A pair of houses, numbers 10 and 12, now a house on the left and flats on the right, built around 1824 and subject to later alterations. The construction is predominantly pinkish-brown brick with scored stucco facades on the front and side, the right side being painted. The building has a Welsh slate roof and cast-iron railings.

The houses are three storeys high with basements, and attics to the rear, featuring a two-window arrangement on the first floor, 1:1. The first floor has French windows with 20 panes, each with a five-pane sidelight; the left window has a blind box within a wider, elliptically-arched, chamfered surround. The second floor has four 6/6 sash windows within moulded surrounds. There is a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The ground floor has three steps leading to identical central entrances, each featuring six-panel doors with overlights containing glazing bars, set within a surround of Doric pilasters and an entablature. Six/six sash windows are set within wider, elliptically-arched surrounds with moulded architraves. The basement has part-glazed central doors, a 3/6 sash window to the left, and a replacement tripartite sash window to the right. The first floor has continuous balconies with a figure-of-eight motif.

The interior of the left-hand house includes a staircase with stick balusters, a marble fireplace on the ground floor, and a tiled fireplace on the first floor. Attached to the property are lancet railings flanking the steps and across the front.

Portland Street was laid out between 1823 and 1824, and these houses are believed to be among the first built. Their design is similar to numbers 20A and 22-30 (even) Regent Street and number 29 Portland Street.
