Description

23 and 25 Portland Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat, built between 1824 and 1836, with later additions and alterations, including dormers added in the mid to late 20th century. The building features pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade and a Welsh slate roof. It stands three storeys high with an attic and has two windows on the first floor.

On the first floor, there is a decorative band with fielded pilaster strips at the ends. To the left, there is a canted bay window with a combination of 2/2 sash windows and 1/1 sashes, with blind boxes. To the right, there is a 6/6 sash window with a sill. The second floor also has a decorative band with fielded pilaster strips and features 6/6 sash windows with sills. A frieze, cornice, and blocking course partially conceal the roof dormers.

The ground floor shows horizontal rustication on the sides. There are steps leading to two entrances on the right side: one is a glazed door, and the other is a 4-panel, part-glazed door with a blind fanlight set within a recess that has a moulded surround and keystone. To the left, there is a cambered carriage arch with a keystone, and a plate-glass shop window is located nearby. The building has end stacks.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Portland Street was laid out between 1823 and 1824.
