Description

This is a terrace of six houses, now shops with flats above, built around 1820-1830 in Royal Leamington Spa. The terrace, incorporating No. 27 Portland Street, forms part of Regent Street. The construction is primarily reddish-brown brick with stucco facades, with the two houses on the right unpainted and the rest painted. The roof is of Welsh slate on the right-hand side, concealed elsewhere.

The building is three storeys high with attics to the gables, the left-hand gable and the gable of No. 31 being prominent. There are twelve first-floor windows, two per house. The first floor features six tall 6/9 sash windows with horns, two plate-glass French windows with overlights, four tall 6/6 sash windows, all set in plain reveals. The second floor has two 2/2 sash windows, four 6/6 sash windows, two 20th-century windows, and four more 6/6 sash windows, all with sills and in plain reveals. The ground floor now comprises shop fronts with flats above; the properties between numbers 25 and 33 retain original side entrances with steps leading to 2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-panel doors with overlights, the entrance to the right being surrounded by pilasters. Otherwise, the ground floor has glazed entrances to shop fronts, the shop front of No. 33 featuring Art Nouveau glazing bars.

Tall end stacks with cornices are present. The attics have casement windows, and the left-hand gable has three round-headed lancet windows. The left return side has five 6/6 sash windows and a blind opening in plain reveals with tooled architraves and sills. The interior remains uninspected.

The terrace is part of Regent Street, originally known as Cross Street, which was laid out between 1808 and 1814.
