Description

Birkland House is a house that has been converted into flats, built between 1824 and 1836. It features a pinkish-brown brick structure with a painted stucco front facade and a Welsh slate roof, along with a cast-iron balcony. The building has four storeys, including an attic and a basement, and displays three first-floor windows.

Architectural details include a first-floor band, tall 6/9 sash windows with sills, and 6/6 sash windows on the second floor. A cornice is present, and the third floor features 3/6 sash windows beneath a low parapet. The attic has gabled roof dormers. The ground floor showcases a band with horizontal rustication and a central entrance that consists of a panelled and roll-moulded door with a fanlight, set within a recessed surround. This entrance is framed by a Roman Doric porch with engaged pilasters and an entablature. The first floor has a continuous balcony decorated with a heart-and-anthemion motif, and the basement also has 6/6 sash windows. The building has end stacks.

The interior has not been inspected. Portland Street, where Birkland House is located, was laid out between 1823 and 1824.
