Description

No. 13 Portland Place is a house that has been converted into flats, built around 1824-1836 with later alterations. It is constructed of brick with painted stucco facades and has a Welsh slate roof. The building stands three storeys high with a basement and features three first-floor windows.

On the first floor, there are six-over-six sash windows, and the second floor also has six-over-six sash windows. The ground floor has steps leading to a central entrance, which consists of a six-panel door with an overlight. The doorcase is adorned with fluted pilasters and a frieze, and there are six-over-six sash windows on this level as well. All windows have plain reveals and sills, while the basement includes casement windows. The roof is hipped to the right, and there are tall stacks with cornices at the left end and rear of the building.

The right facade features two first-floor windows, mainly six-over-six sashes, and one three-over-six sash on the third floor, all with plain reveals and sills. At the rear, there is a 15-pane staircase window with radial glazing at the top, along with six-over-six and three-over-six sash windows. Inside, some windows have shutters.

Historically, Portland Place and Portland Street were laid out between 1823 and 1824. The building occupies a significant corner site at the junction of Portland Place and Portland Street and is part of a group with Nos 22-38 (even) Portland Street.
