Description

Number 34 is a house, now divided into flats, with attached railings. It was built around 1824 and has undergone some later additions and alterations. The building is made of pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco facades and features a Welsh slate roof along with cast-iron railings. It stands three storeys high with a basement and has three first-floor windows, with an extension set back to the right. There are four steps leading to the central entrance, which consists of a two-panel door topped by an overlight with glazing bars, all within a distyle Ionic porch that has engaged Doric pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are 3/3 sashes, while the first floor features 8/8 sashes with sills and plain reveals. The building has a frieze, cornice, low parapet, and end stacks, and the basement includes glazed doors and casements.

On the garden facade, there is a continuous ground-floor verandah adorned with slender scrolls and two 12-pane French windows. Inside, there is a tall, 8/8 stained glass staircase window with margin lights. The interior is noted for retaining original plasterwork and joinery, including shutters on some windows. The side railings are lancet style with newels topped by urn finials.

Historically, Portland Place was laid out between 1823 and 1824.
