Description

Number 9 is a house that has been converted into flats, built between 1818 and 1827, with later additions and alterations including mid-20th century attic dormers. It features reddish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, a Welsh slate roof, and cast-iron railings and balcony.

The building stands three storeys high with a basement and attic, and has five first-floor windows, along with an extension at the rear. The ground floor displays horizontal rustication, while the first and second floors have a central slightly recessed panel that is one window wide. The first floor includes a central French window, which is partly boarded, and eight-pane French windows with divided overlights, all featuring margin-lights. The second floor has 6/6 sash windows with sills. A frieze and modillion cornice run along the top.

Access to the ground floor is via three steps leading to a central entrance that has a three-panel door with a roll-moulded lower panel and an overlight, all within a distyle Doric porch that includes a frieze and cornice. The ground floor also has 6/6 sash windows with sills, while the basement features a concealed entrance below the porch and otherwise blocked openings. All windows are set in plain reveals, and the raised gable ends have copings with tall end stacks. The first-floor balcony has a balustrade with a double-heart-and-anthemion motif made by the Carron Company.

The interior has not been inspected. The area railings abut the sides of the porch and have mainly fleur-de-lys finials, some of which have been replaced, along with newel posts that have urn finials. The gate to the basement features spikes.

Historically, Charlotte Street was marked out by 1818 and was built along by 1834. Numbers 7-19 (odd) on Charlotte Street form an architectural group.
