Description

A pair of houses at 11 and 13 Charlotte Street, Royal Leamington Spa, were built between 1818 and 1827, with later additions and alterations. The exterior is red-brown brick with painted stucco facades, a Welsh slate roof, and cast-iron balconies.

The houses are three storeys high with basements and attics to the gables, featuring four first-floor windows. They have recessed two-storey, single first-floor window entrance bays at each end. The ground floor has horizontal rustication. A central, narrow recess extends from the ground to the second floor. The first floor contains ten-pane French windows with divided overlights and margin-lights; three part-blocked, six-pane French windows with divided overlights, all with margin-lights, except for a three-pane overlight on the right. The end ranges incorporate three-pane sashes to the left and three-by-six-pane sashes to the right. The second floor has six-by-six sashes with sills. A frieze and a modillion cornice are present on the left side. The ground floor features six-by-six sashes with sills, all in plain reveals. The entrances have elliptically-arched openings with recessed three-panel doors. The lower panel is roll-moulded and part-glazed on the right, with overlights above. Blocked openings are visible at basement level. The gables are raised with copings, and end stacks are present. Two balconies, featuring a Carron Company double-heart-and-anthemion motif balustrade, are located on the first floor.

The interior was not inspected during the listing process. Charlotte Street was laid out by 1818 and constructed by 1834. Numbers 7 to 19 (the odd numbers) of Charlotte Street form an architectural group.
