Description
Number 19 is a house that has been converted into flats, built between 1818 and 1827, with later additions and alterations, including a mid-20th century attic dormer. The building features reddish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade, a concealed roof, and cast-iron railings.
The exterior consists of three storeys plus a basement and attic, with five windows on the first floor. The ground floor has horizontal rustication, while the first and second floors feature a central, slightly recessed panel that is one window wide. The first floor includes six-pane French windows with divided overlights, most of which have margin-lights. The second floor has 6/6 sash windows with sills. A frieze and modillion cornice are present, and the ground floor has a central entrance with four steps leading up to a three-panel door, which has a roll-moulded lower panel and an overlight with glazing bars, set in panelled reveals and within a distyle Doric porch that has a deep frieze and cornice. The remaining windows are 6/6 sashes, while the basement features two 8/12 sash windows, with other openings blocked. All windows have plain reveals, and there are end stacks. The first floor also has a continuous balcony adorned with a double-heart-and-anthemion motif.
The interior has not been inspected. The subsidiary features include railings with fleur-de-lys finials on the sides of the porch and adjacent to the house on both sides.
Historically, Charlotte Street was laid out by 1818 and was fully built by 1834. Numbers 7-19 (odd) on Charlotte Street form an architectural group.
