Description
Number 1 is a house now converted into flats, built around 1832 with later additions and alterations. It features reddish-brown brick in English Garden Wall bond with painted stucco on the front facade, a concealed roof, and a cast-iron balcony and railings.
The building has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a full-height canted bay and four first-floor windows arranged in a 1:3 pattern. On the ground floor, there is an entrance to the left with glazed double doors and a divided overlight, set within a projecting single-storey porch that has a round-arched opening. The bay has casement windows in splayed surrounds and a central blind box.
On the first floor, there is a 10-pane French window with plain reveals. The bay features a tall central 3/3 sash window between casements, all with plain reveals and sills. The second floor has casement windows throughout, with a frieze and cornice interrupted by a casement leading to the attic. There are additional tilt windows in the bay with plain reveals. The building has copings and side and front stacks. The basement includes a glazed door and a casement window, while the first-floor balcony has a figure-of-eight-and-circle balustrade.
The area railings are notable for their bars with anthemion finials and spear-headed dogbars. Dale Street was laid out in 1832, with the east side of the street built by 1834.
