Description
Number 5 is a house that has been converted into flats, built around 1824 with later alterations. It features a pinkish-brown brick structure with a painted stucco front facade and a cement-tile roof. The building is three storeys high, with a basement and an attic that extends to the gable. The first floor has two windows, which are 6-pane French windows with divided overlights. The second and ground floors have 6/6 sash windows with sills, all set in plain reveals. The entrance is located to the left and consists of five roll-edged steps leading up to a part-glazed, four-panel door. The basement includes a glazed door and a 6/6 sash window. The attic has a casement window at the gable end. There are two tall chimney stacks with cornices at the right end of the building. The porch features a scroll design on its uprights, and each first-floor window has an individual balcony adorned with a double-heart-and-anthemion motif from the Carron Company.
The area railings and gate, as well as the railings on either side of the steps, are designed with alternating anthemion and fleur-de-lys finials. Portland Street was laid out between 1824 and 1836.
