Description

Number 8 is a villa that has been converted into a hotel, built between 1824 and 1836, with later additions and alterations including a mid-20th century extension to the rear and right. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with scored and painted stucco facades, and the left return is pebble-dashed. It features a Welsh slate roof and cast-iron railings.

The exterior is two storeys high with a basement and attic under the gable. It has three first-floor windows and a single-storey recessed range to the right. On the first floor, there is a continuous band topped by Doric pilasters at the ends and between the windows. The windows are 10-pane French windows with margin-lights, and there is a frieze, cornice, and a low parapet above. The central entrance on the ground floor has four steps leading up to a three-fielded-panel door with a fanlight featuring radial glazing, all within a distyle Doric porch with engaged pilasters and an entablature with a blocking course. Bow windows on either side rise from the basement, each with two 6/6 sashes per bow and a blocking course. The right extension includes a 6/6 sash window with an elliptical arch. The building has end stacks and a continuous balcony on the first floor with a circle-motif balustrade.

Inside, there is a central dogleg staircase with stick balusters, a modillion cornice in the hall, and a slate fireplace in the right room. The area railings and those on the sides of the porch have triple-motif finials.

Historically, Portland Place was laid out between 1823 and 1824, and Numbers 2-12 (even) Portland Place form an architectural group.
