Description

NUMBER 9 AND ATTACHED RAILINGS

This house, now flats, was built around 1832, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco front facade, and has cement-tile and lead roofs. Cast-iron features include a verandah and railings.

The exterior is three storeys with an attic and basement, featuring two first-floor windows. The ground floor is rusticated, as is the basement. The left side features a front entrance with five roll-edged steps leading to a part-glazed door and overlight, set within a distyle porch of engaged Tuscan pilasters and fluted Egyptian columns. A tripartite window has 1/1 sashes under a rusticated flat arch with a raised keystone. The first floor has tall 6/9 sashes with margin lights and moulded surrounds. The second floor features two 6/6 sashes with moulded surrounds and sills. The basement has a part-glazed, four-panel door, a casement window, and a 4/8 sash. A frieze, cornice, and blocking course ramp downwards to the right. Dormers with casements are visible on the roof, as are side stacks. There is a continuous verandah with an elongated-figure-of-eight balustrade on the first floor. The frieze, cornice, and blocking course continue with those of the adjacent building at No. 11.

Inside, original plasterwork and joinery remain, including pull-up shutters to the basement window.

The attached railings are lancet shaped, with a gate providing access to the basement and the sides of the porch.

Dale Street was laid out around 1832, and the east side was completed by 1834.
