Description

No. 7 Charlotte Street is a house, now divided into flats, built around 1818 to 1827, with later additions and alterations, including a mid-20th century attic dormer. The building features reddish-brown brick with painted stucco facades and a Welsh slate roof, complemented by a cast-iron balcony. It has a central hallway plan and stands three storeys tall with a basement and attic, featuring five first-floor windows.

The exterior displays horizontal rustication on the ground floor, with a central slightly recessed panel that is one window wide extending from the first to the second floors. The first floor has 8-pane French windows with margin-lights and divided overlights that include louvred windows. The second floor features 6/6 sash windows with sills. The ground floor has a central entrance with two steps leading to a three-panel door, where the lower panel is roll-moulded, topped by an overlight within a distyle Doric porch that has a deep frieze and cornice. The remaining openings on the ground floor are 6/6 sashes, and the basement has blocked openings. All openings are in plain reveals. The raised gable ends have copings and a block of end stacks. A continuous balcony on the first floor is adorned with a balustrade featuring a double-heart-and-anthemion motif from the Carron Company. A lion-and-wreath door knocker adds a decorative touch.

Inside, there is a central narrow-openwell staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. Historically, Charlotte Street was laid out by 181 and was built up by 1834. Nos 7-19 (odd) Charlotte Street form an architectural group.
