Description
47 Portland Street is a house that has been converted into flats. It was built between 1824 and 1836 and features pinkish-brown brick in English bond, with painted stucco on the front and side facades. The building has four storeys and a basement, with three windows on the first floor.
Tall Tuscan pilasters are located at both ends and between the windows on the first and second floors. There is a canted bay window on the left side that extends from the basement to the first floor. The first floor canted bay includes a band and has a central 6/6 sash window, with 4/4 sashes on either side, all set in tooled architraves. The remaining windows on the first floor are 6/6 sashes with raised cornices. The second floor has 6/6 sashes throughout, while the third floor features 3/6 sashes with tooled surrounds.
The ground floor has three steps leading to a central entrance, which consists of a part-glazed, six-panel door topped with a fanlight that has radial glazing, all within a 20th-century part-glazed porch. There is a 6/6 sash window between two 4/4 sashes in the canted bay, and another 6/6 sash to the right. The building has a low parapet and side stacks.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Portland Street was laid out between 1823 and 1824.
