Description
39 and 41 Portland Street are a pair of houses built between 1824 and 1836, with some later alterations. They are constructed of brick with a painted stucco front facade and feature a Welsh slate roof. The buildings rise three storeys with a basement and have a four-window range on the first floor, arranged in a 2:2 pattern. There is a first-floor band, and the windows consist of 6/6 sashes with sills throughout, with the two on the left having tooled architraves. The second floor has 3/6 sashes with sills, and those on the left also have tooled architraves.
On the ground floor, there are side entrances leading to a six-panel door and a part-glazed four-panel door, both of which have overlights and pilastered surrounds with a frieze and cornice; there is a blind box to the right. The left canted bay features 2/2 windows between 1/1 sashes, while the right canted bay has 1/1 sashes. The basements include a part-glazed door to the left and a replacement 3/3 sash to the right. The buildings also have ridge stacks. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, Portland Street was laid out between 1823 and 1824.
